The Best Weekend Getaways

By Matthew Furst

Forty-eight hours isn’t a lot of time, but if the weekend is all you have for an adventure, here’s a list of America’s best weekend getaways:

  1. Amelia Island
Hidden in northern Florida in the Atlantic, Amelia Island is perfect for a warm weekend of kayaking, fishing and relaxation. The island is steeped in American history and offers visitors 13 miles of pristine beaches, abundant wildlife sightings and the chance to make the most of your downtime.

Where to Stay: Try the Amelia Island Williams House. This bed and breakfast is known as one of the island’s grandest historic homes.

  2. The Adirondacks
While this may be surprising to some, Adirondacks Park is the largest forest preserve in the United States. Bigger than both Yellowstone and Glacier parks combined. Here, visitors will find miles upon miles of hiking, biking and wilderness, all of which will help you forget, at least for a while, about the world you’ve left behind.

Where to Stay: If camping isn’t your cup of tea, book a room at the Glen Lodge and Market. While retaining all the rustic charm of the surrounding world, this lodge retains all the modern amenities you left at home.

  3. Austin, Texas
Like a living experiment in paradoxes, the city of Austin is lively and relaxed all at the same time. Home to some of the world’s greatest music festivals, Austin is sure to deliver great food, great culture and an amazing time.

Where to Stay: The Driskill Hotel will not disappoint. This historic building, located in the heart of the city, is sure to keep you close to the action and allow for quiet as needed.

  4. Mt. Hood
Located just outside of Portland, Ore., this escape is for those seeking the drastic. Mt. Hood reaches nearly 12,000 feet into the sky, and offers visitors the opportunity to climb year round and ski and snowboard into the month of June.

Where to Stay: Built in the late 1930s, the Timberline Lodge provides the perfect backdrop to your mountain weekend. Whether skiing, climbing or merely escape is your desire, this lodge will get the job done.

  5. Alexandria, La.
You’ll discover another world in Alexandria. One where alligator, crawfish and oysters are the main courses. You’ll explore bayous and old Creole culture. For a quick adventure that’s focused on getting away, you likely can’t get any further than Alexandria.

Where to Stay: To completely immerse yourself in the local culture, stay at the Fairmount Plantation Bed and Breakfast. This active pecan orchard was once a plantation and offers a stunning bucolic view, as well as a healthy dose of history, and serves as an excellent jumping off point for your weekend getaway.
